Recently I’ve heard about Max Howell‘s homebrew and Wayne E. Seguin’s rvm from a friend (caffo), and hearing that they were both pretty cool, I decided to give them a shot.

So if, like me, you are curious about these tools, I’ll post what I did to install them.

First I made backups (by moving some folders around)

mv ~/.gem ~/gems-old
sudo mv /opt/local ~/macports-old

You could also install a gem called ‘rubygems_snapshot’ and do a

gem snapshot export ~/my_gem_list.yml

or a simple

gem list > ~/gem_list.txt

and just plain delete your user gem repository

rm -rf ~/.gem/

Of course I am assuming you were installing them in your home directory, why wouldn’t you be?

But if by any chance you have gems installed all over the place you could try running this instead (since this would remove the applicable executables as well):

sudo gem list | awk '{print $1}' | xargs sudo gem uninstall -a -x -i

Now let’s get started.

Installing homebrew

official installation instructions

Start by running:

ruby < <( curl 'http://gist.github.com/raw/323731/25f99360c7de3f72027d8fd07cb369b1c8756ea6/install_homebrew.rb' )

or download it from here and run it yourself.

If by any chance you don't trust or know what that does, you can test it by running the code below that calls this simple and safe ruby script first.

ruby < <( curl 'http://gist.github.com/raw/385387/0cacf4231fceb621c987221ee0aaa380be2bca5d/testing_download_and_run.rb' )

If you are curious, this is the source of that gist:

#!/usr/bin/env ruby
puts 'Hello World'

Then install Xcode, I recommend downloading the latest version <ins datetime="2010-04-30T17:45:15+00:00">3.2.2 at this moment</ins> from apple's website.

If you are the only person using your computer, you can change the ownership of /usr/local by doing a:

sudo chown -R $USER /user/local

Delete some folders:

rm -rf /usr/local/include
rm -rf /usr/local/lib

After that you can start playing around with homebrew i.e.

brew install wget

I install most if not all of my stuff from brew now, even mysql and other things that I would rather not get from port.
Warning: do not remove your system's /usr/bin/ruby since brew depends on it.

Let's move to rvm installation now

(official installation instructions)

To Install/update from the github repository, which they recommend, run:

bash < <( curl 'http://rvm.beginrescueend.com/releases/rvm-install-head' )

I had a version of ree installed in /opt, so I just deleted it, I recommend that you do the same.

Add this to your .bash_profile or .bash_rc file, whichever you use.

source ~/.rvm/scripts/rvm

They advise you to put it at the end of it, and to make sure you have no returns inside your file.

I have a reload function in my file so I just ran reload

<pre class="brush: bash; light: true;>
reload () { source ~/.bash_profile }

but you have to source again the files you usually load when you open a new terminal.

Now start playing with rvm! Install your rubies!

rvm install ree
rvm install 1.9.1
rvm install 1.9.2-head

Set the one you use the most as the default one, at work is ree:

rvm ree --default

Everytime you open a new terminal, it should be using the default rvm ruby, but to make you might want to add the rvm-prompt feature to your default PS1. Add ~/.rvm/bin/rvm-prompt i v to your PS1 variable, something like:

# a fancy ps1
export PS1="\e[1;33m\u\e[0m|\e[1;32m\h\e[0m \e[1;34m\w\e[0m |\e[33m$(~/.rvm/bin/rvm-prompt i v)\e[0m|\n\$ "

If you want to install a gem for all of your rubies run

rvm gem install gemname

if not, you just use your regular gem to install stuff (it should be using the specific gem for your chosen ruby - as you can see below).

$ which ruby
/Users/jao/.rvm/rubies/ree-1.8.7-2010.01/bin/ruby
$ which gem
/Users/jao/.rvm/rubies/ree-1.8.7-2010.01/bin/gem

I think that sums it up. Have fun!
And ask questions or say if something is wrong in the comments.

So, I wake up with the phone ringing, I pick up and it’s a girl I haven’t seen or heard of in the past 15 years. I was so sleepy I couldn’t really understand or remember what she was saying. I remember her though, I think her name was Mirella, she was blonde and cute.

I met her back in the day when I used to spend most vacations, holidays and breaks in a beach called ‘Guaecá’… I believe she was my friend’s cousin’s friend, but that is irrelevant.

She was being really nice even if I couldn’t understand her, until suddenly the phone started to fail. I figured I should try hitting the handset a couple times when I see a disconnected wire, so I say “the phone is not working, I can’t hear you!” while trying to fix it. And ‘voi là’ I can hear her again and I feel happy about it, still can’t get what she is saying though.

Apparently I can’t focus well enough to actually listen to her, so I pay attention to the phone instead, and only then I realize two things:
1. it was one of those old rotary phones;
2. it was a dream…

So I wake up again, and start typing this on my phone.

In January, a friend and I started a long process of studying the art of the beer. We went through approximately 150 different beers since then, and this last weekend we hosted our first beer tasting event.

It was a little crash course for a small group of friends, and we served 23 different beers, some were very rare (or at least hard to find), and some were new even to both of us.

We made a simple tasting form for each beer, and gave them to everyone that joined us there.

And a few hours later, all the bottles were empty, people were very happy and surprised with all the details they could now look for anytime they want to try a new beer, or even “judge” one of the many beers they were already used to.

Of course, this whole project will soon become an online catalog, and maybe one day even specific apps for a smartphone or two.

Suffice to say we took some amazing souvenirs, including a helmet from 1946 – that I saved to wear riding the harley I will eventually have, some rifle that I can’t name right now – not even sure it was a real one, and a weird bat with the word “japson”(?) written on it.

Oh, did I mention my friend had to wear a chastity belt? Yeah, this was t.m.i. even for a dream.

For a good part of my life I had a dream that used to freak me out, <del datetime="2010-01-18T17:51:06+00:00">even</del> specially when I was awake.

It was basically a recurrent dream where I would be repeatedly crushed by a giant gear system (a cartoon like, flatten image of myself). There was no pain whatsoever, in fact, what really bothered me was the soundtrack, I can’t really describe it very well, it was an endless loop with a very specific pattern, imagine some kind of techno beat with metallic sounds and lots of reverberation.

The reason it freaked me out so much was because I recognized that pattern in people’s speech patterns, or in construction site sounds, or in traffic sounds, or even in a “silent” room. It happened more often when I was sleep deprived or in a caffeine rush, or just plain tired.

It would make me feel weird and inadequate at first, then some sort of panic, and soon enough sick to my stomach. Of course, once I recognized said pattern I would try to avoid it as much as I could because I simply could not break the loop in my head.

To this day this will happen eventually, it is not as hard as it used to be when I was a kid or teenager, but it still freaks me enough that I need to almost go deaf listening to music to overcome the stupid pattern. And yes, I am writing this because it is happening today.

I was inside a building, the same where we organized the quakenet3 in, helping set up a new infrastructure for some reason. When he-who-shall-not-be-named walks in with a gun (a 9mm to be precise), points the gun to my head – what makes me laugh – and shoots me in the head. It hurts a lot, and I feel something dripping through the whole, but other than the pain (which I woke up with) is really strong.

I start walking away, while other people still repair the electric system, and when I go to the other room, there is a party going on, I meet a girl that only speaks english and we kind of click, and I end up kissing another girl. And I decide to leave.

It is sunny outside, and I meet another friend, emage, that now looks like a basketball player (really tall and strong with a shaved head – I think he was even dressed in similar clothing – when in fact he is skinny, and a little taller than me). He helps me out a lot, and I drive him home (the fact that I was shot still persists).

Sometime later I wake up, and the pain sensation is still there.

Weird.

I am looking for a new camera, and I’ve set my eyes on the Canon EOS Rebel XSi… It seems to be a good relationship in price x quality. It will be my first real digital slr, so most would agree that going with a canon or nikon is a good idea.

I found it on ebay, with a bunch of accessories and shipping for 1200 usd (taxes not included), and in here – just the camera – for 1800 brl. Then I decided to check bhphoto, and the camera with some key accessories plus shipping and taxes* would go for 1700 usd.

It’s a hard decision, to be honest, but it seems like traveling to the US and buying it there is not a bad idea, since I can buy some clothes and other smaller things that would make the trip worth it.

I’m just waiting for a reponse from the insurance guy, so see if I can buy my camera in the US and still get it covered by their insurance policy.

I, alone, spent close to $1200 in the last 15 years with this franchise… Congratulations warcraft… I guess.

Well, what can I say, if the movie was a preview of the future, I would probably die from boredom before the catastrophic events occur – I think I actually took a nap during it.

I guess the whole earth shattering scenes were cool, but oh my god I kept trying to find young Elijah Wood in a motorcycle looking for Leelee Sobieski and yelling “Sarah!”, which to me already says a lot.

Predictable, boring, exaggerated, and kind of lame – seriously, isn’t the earth exploding not enough, the hero and his friends/family need to be half a second away from escaping EVERY single time?

Yet, it met my entertainment expectations. I hated how the ending was all happy and shiny after a freaking cataclysm. I honestly wanted to see a sea monster attacking one of the arks! I did like the multitude of languages and accents spoken during the movie.
