In January, a friend and I started a long process of studying the art of the beer. We went through approximately 150 different beers since then, and this last weekend we hosted our first beer tasting event.

It was a little crash course for a small group of friends, and we served 23 different beers, some were very rare (or at least hard to find), and some were new even to both of us.

We made a simple tasting form for each beer, and gave them to everyone that joined us there.

And a few hours later, all the bottles where empty, people were very happy and surprised with all the details they could now look for anytime they want to try a new beer, or even “judge” one of the many beers they were already used to.

Of course, this whole project will soon become an online catalog, and maybe one day even specific apps for a smartphone or two.

Suffice to say we took some amazing souvenirs, including a helmet from 1946 – that I saved to wear riding the harley I will eventually have, some rifle that I can’t name right now – not even sure it was a real one, and a weird bat with the word “japson”(?) written on it.

Oh, did I mention my friend had to wear a chastity belt? Yeah, this was t.m.i. even for a dream.

For a good part of my life I had a dream that used to freak me out, <del datetime="2010-01-18T17:51:06+00:00">even</del> specially when I was awake.

It was basically a recurrent dream where I would be repeatedly crushed by a giant gear system (a cartoon like, flatten image of myself). There was no pain whatsoever, in fact, what really bothered me was the soundtrack, I can’t really describe it very well, it was an endless loop with a very specific pattern, imagine some kind of techno beat with metallic sounds and lots of reverberation.

The reason it freaked me out so much was because I recognized that pattern in people’s speech patterns, or in construction site sounds, or in traffic sounds, or even in a “silent” room. It happened more often when I was sleep deprived or in a caffeine rush, or just plain tired.

It would make me feel weird and inadequate at first, then some sort of panic, and soon enough sick to my stomach. Of course, once I recognized said pattern I would try to avoid it as much as I could because I simply could not break the loop in my head.

To this day this will happen eventually, it is not as hard as it used to be when I was a kid or teenager, but it still freaks me enough that I need to almost go deaf listening to music to overcome the stupid pattern. And yes, I am writing this because it is happening today.

I was inside a building, the same where we organized the quakenet3 in, helping set up a new infrastructure for some reason. When he-who-shall-not-be-named walks in with a gun (a 9mm to be precise), points the gun to my head – what makes me laugh – and shoots me in the head. It hurts a lot, and I feel something dripping through the whole, but other than the pain (which I woke up with) is really strong.

I start walking away, while other people still repair the electric system, and when I go to the other room, there is a party going on, I meet a girl that only speaks english and we kind of click, and I end up kissing another girl. And I decide to leave.

It is sunny outside, and I meet another friend, emage, that now looks like a basketball player (really tall and strong with a shaved head – I think he was even dressed in similar clothing – when in fact he is skinny, and a little taller than me). He helps me out a lot, and I drive him home (the fact that I was shot still persists).

Sometime later I wake up, and the pain sensation is still there.

Weird.

I am looking for a new camera, and I’ve set my eyes on the Canon EOS Rebel XSi… It seems to be a good relationship in price x quality. It will be my first real digital slr, so most would agree that going with a canon or nikon is a good idea.

I found it on ebay, with a bunch of accessories and shipping for 1200 usd (taxes not included), and in here – just the camera – for 1800 brl. Then I decided to check bhphoto, and the camera with some key accessories plus shipping and taxes* would go for 1700 usd.

It’s a hard decision, to be honest, but it seems like traveling to the US and buying it there is not a bad idea, since I can buy some clothes and other smaller things that would make the trip worth it.

I’m just waiting for a reponse from the insurance guy, so see if I can buy my camera in the US and still get it covered by their insurance policy.

I, alone, spent close to $1200 in the last 15 years with this franchise… Congratulations warcraft… I guess.

Well, what can I say, if the movie was a preview of the future, I would probably die from boredom before the catastrophic events occur – I think I actually took a nap during it.

I guess the whole earth shattering scenes were cool, but oh my god I kept trying to find young Elijah Wood in a motorcycle looking for Leelee Sobieski and yelling “Sarah!”, which to me already says a lot.

Predictable, boring, exaggerated, and kind of lame – seriously, isn’t the earth exploding not enough, the hero and his friends/family need to be half a second away from escaping EVERY single time?

Yet, it met my entertainment expectations. I hated how the ending was all happy and shiny after a freaking cataclysm. I honestly wanted to see a sea monster attacking one of the arks! I did like the multitude of languages and accents spoken during the movie.

Well, this is a mention of my first website, designed and programmed, using my very own blog tool, blogware. Easier to do that back then, even wordpress was a simple blog tool back then – not a CMS like it is today.

Back in the late 90s, I used to write mostly about my life, but I used this website more to test new technologies, and workarounds, solutions to get things done. I remember that I used a javascript/iframes/php hack to make “ajax”-like calls. And to my knowledge, this site was the very first one to use these emulated calls like that.

used to write comments without reloading the page

I remember how this code used to work, and I remember being kind of cool back then, all of my friends were thrilled by this. Sadly or fortunately, that is nothing special these days.

mysql queries and html code all mixed together, funny!

The php source is even weirder to look at, I miss the recklessness that was programming with sql calls being made from all over the place. I remember a couple years later I started writing my own framework (like every other programmer) and it was pretty solid by the time Ruby on Rails exploded everything with it’s simplicity and agility.

I am considering refactoring blogware, well, actually making a new blogware would be more accurate, probably using ruby and RoR, adding some cool web 2.0 features that you can find in current cms/blog tools. And maybe some crazy new things that will be properly used 5 years from now.
